How to Use eCitizen Kenya Step by Step — A Simple Guide for Older Adults

Imagine your father or mother travelling from dala (home) — from Kisumu, Kakamega, or Meru — all the way to Nairobi just to renew their passport. They wake up before dawn. They board a matatu. They travel for hours. They arrive at Nyayo House.

And then they are told: "We no longer process that here. You have to go online."

They stand there, tired from the journey, and have no idea what "go online" even means.

This is happening to thousands of older Kenyans every single week. And it is completely unnecessary — because with eCitizen, your parent or grandparent can access over 5,000 government services from home. No matatu. No queue. No wasted day.

eCitizen is the Government of Kenya's official online platform. It is a website where you can apply for government documents and services — from your phone or computer — without leaving your home.

Think of it like a government office that is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and never has a queue.

You can find it at www.ecitizen.go.ke on any phone or computer with internet. It is free to create an account. You only pay when you apply for a specific service.

Before you create your eCitizen account, make sure you have these four things ready. Do not start without them.

• Your National ID card — you will need your ID number exactly as it appears on the card
• An email address — this is where eCitizen will send you important messages. If you do not have one, ask a family member to help you create a Gmail account first
• A phone number — your Safaricom, Airtel, or other Kenyan number. eCitizen will send a one-time code (OTP) to verify it is really you
• M-Pesa on your phone — for paying fees when you apply for services

My payment went through but eCitizen did not confirm it	Wait 15 minutes — payments sometimes take time to reflect. If it still does not show, call eCitizen on 020 2370230 with your M-Pesa confirmation SMS ready.
My details do not match what is on the system	Visit your nearest Huduma Centre with your original ID card. The staff will help you update your details on the system.
