1
Why Health Technology Matters for Older Adults

Healthcare in Kenya has real challenges for older adults. Hospitals can be far away, transport is expensive, and waiting rooms are exhausting. For those managing chronic conditions like hypertension, diabetes, or arthritis โ€” frequent hospital visits are both costly and tiring.

Technology is changing this. You can now monitor your blood pressure at home and share the readings with your doctor digitally. You can book a doctor consultation over the phone without travelling. You can set an alarm to remind you to take your medication at exactly the right time every day.

๐Ÿ

Medication Reminders and Management

Missing medication is one of the most common health risks for older adults managing chronic conditions. A single missed blood pressure tablet or diabetes medication can have serious consequences. Your phone is your most reliable alarm clock โ€” and setting it up takes less than two minutes.

The Simplest Method โ€” Phone Alarms

  1. 1
Open the Clock app on your Android phone
  2. 2
Tap the alarm icon at the bottom
  3. 3
Tap the plus (+) button to add a new alarm
  4. 4
Set the time your medication is due
  5. 5
Tap "Label" and type the name of the medication โ€” for example "Blood pressure tablet"
  6. 6
Select which days it should repeat โ€” tap every day if you take it daily
  7. 7
Tap Save. Repeat for each medication you take.

Fitness Trackers Available in Kenya
Older Kenyan adults learning to use a smartphone with guidance
A healthcare worker helps an older Kenyan adult understand her fitness tracker readings. Learning to use health technology with guidance builds confidence and independence.

A fitness tracker is a small device worn on your wrist โ€” like a watch โ€” that monitors your health automatically throughout the day. It counts your steps, monitors your heart rate, tracks your sleep, and alerts you if readings seem unusual.

All devices listed below are available in Kenya at Safaricom shops, Jumia Kenya, Naivas electronics sections, and major retail stores in Nairobi and Nakuru.

Using Health Technology Safely

โ“ Frequently Asked Questions

Can I really see a real qualified doctor through my phone in Kenya?
Yes. Daktari Online and Zuri Health both operate with licensed Kenyan doctors who are registered with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council. A telemedicine consultation is a real doctor appointment โ€” the doctor can diagnose common conditions, prescribe medication, and refer you to a specialist or hospital if needed. For serious emergencies, always go to a physical hospital.
Is my SHIF membership still valid after the change from NHIF?
If you were registered with NHIF, your membership was automatically migrated to SHIF. However, you should verify your status by visiting sha.go.ke or going to your nearest Huduma Centre with your national ID. Some members need to update their details or re-register dependants under the new system. Huduma Centre staff will help you at no charge.
I have never used a fitness tracker before. Is it difficult to set up?
The Xiaomi Smart Band 8 is the most straightforward for first-time users. The setup involves downloading the Zepp Life app from the Google Play Store, creating a simple account, and connecting the band to your phone via Bluetooth. Ask a family member to help you the first time โ€” the setup takes about 15 to 20 minutes. After that, the tracker works automatically without you needing to do anything.
My tracker shows my heart rate is high. Should I go to hospital immediately?
A single high reading on a fitness tracker does not necessarily indicate a problem. Trackers can give inaccurate readings if the band is too loose, if you have just been active, or if you are stressed. Take the reading again after resting for 10 minutes. If it remains consistently high over several readings, call your doctor or use a telemedicine service like Daktari Online for advice before travelling to hospital. If you are experiencing chest pain, difficulty breathing, or feel unwell alongside the high reading, call 999 or 1199 immediately.
Are telemedicine consultations covered by SHIF?
SHIF coverage for telemedicine is still developing in Kenya as of 2026. Currently, most SHIF outpatient benefits apply at accredited physical facilities. M-TIBA by Safaricom works with some SHIF arrangements at partner hospitals. Check directly with your telemedicine provider and SHIF to confirm your specific coverage. Daktari Online and Zuri Health consultations are affordable even without insurance coverage at KES 300 to 500 per session.
My phone is an old Android โ€” will these health apps work on it?
Most health apps listed in this article work on Android phones running version 8.0 (Oreo) or higher, which covers the majority of smartphones sold in Kenya from 2018 onwards. Google Fit, Blood Pressure Diary, Medisafe, and Calm all have low system requirements. To check your Android version, go to Settings, then About Phone, then Software Information. If your phone is very old and apps do not install, the phone alarm method for medication reminders works on every phone regardless of age.
